Contrary to popular opinion, depression is not a condition affecting only young people. More and more frequently, it occurs in the elderly, who often live alone and suffer from poor health. In their case, depression is sometimes mistaken for melancholy, low spirits, moodiness, autumn or winter spleen. Yet, at no age should depression or its symptoms be disregarded or ignored. Untreated depression may significantly deteriorate the quality of life and have an impact on everyday functioning.

Ewa Murak-Kozanecka, a medical doctor in psychiatry, discussed depression symptoms and ways to recognise and cope with them.

Monika Kamieńska, a PhD student at the University of Łódź and an experienced coach working with seniors, convinced the audience that laughter was the best cure, having a great effect on our well-being, and that we should laugh at any age as often as possible.

‘Depression is an increasingly serious problem in today’s world. This is why it is so important to keep a good mood and positive attitude towards the world, people and ourselves as long as possible, and to get together with friends and relatives. Bearing this in mind, we invite seniors for the upcoming conference. We want the meetings organised by our DOZ Foundation to be an opportunity for them to have a good time, with an added educational value,’ said Elżbieta Łacina, member of the DOZ Foundation’s Management Board.

The ‘Positive Thinking’ conference was a fourth meeting for the elderly in the Foundation’s 2018 schedule. It was held as part of the fifth edition of the Łódź Seniors Festival – an event dedicated to people aged 60 and over, intended to encourage them to spend time actively and creatively, learn new things, while developing their passions and interests.

Media partners of the “Positive Thinking” conference were the TVi internet television, Głos Seniora, Cafesenior.pl, and Magazyn 60+.

Conferences and meetings for people aged 60+ are an element of how the DOZ Foundation pursues its mission of helping seniors. Each such event is devoted to a different health issue, key to maintaining good health and well-being by older people. To ensure true value for seniors, the contents of the meetings are developed by well-established experts and professionals, including physicians, dieticians, psychologists, counsellors, and physiotherapists. The events have been hosted every month since February 2018 by the Sukcesja Shopping Centre at Al. Politechniki 1, Łódź (level -1).

In addition to health conferences, the Foundation also invites senior citizens to musical recitals. The forthcoming event, ‘Play, guitar, play’ featuring the Łódź Guitar Orchestra, will take place on May 29th 2018 at 5pm in the Sukcesja Shopping Centre.

The DOZ Dbam o Zdrowie Foundation was established in 2007 on the initiative of its founder, Pelion S.A. A year later, it was included in the list of public benefit organisations. The purpose of the Foundation is to help those in need, in particular by mitigating inequalities in access to healthcare and medication. The Foundation also engages in health, educational and charity activities. To date, its support has been received by the elderly, single mothers, families with many children, and persons suffering from chronic diseases. Since 2013, the DOZ Dbam o Zdrowie Foundation has been a member of the Polish Donors’ Forum association.
