The ‘Around the Brain’ conference attracted a large turnout of seniors. More than 100 people attended lectures dedicated to active stroke prevention, maintaining a healthy diet, and brain training exercises.

The lecturers were well-established experts: Adam Siger, Vice President of the Stroke Foundation, Leonard Szafraniec, MD and Provincial Consultant for Clinical Psychology, and Izabela Nowak, dietitian, working with the Brzeziny Specialist Hospital and running her own ‘Więcej Zdrowia’ practice.

The participants also listened to an interview with Monika Mularska-Kucharek, sociologist, therapist, psychosocial trainer, and co-author of ‘Jesień życia? Wiosna możliwości’ (Autumn of Life? A Spring of Opportunities), a guide for seniors, their families and carers, on how to find contentment in life and overcome everyday challenges. The interview was conducted by Monika Kamieńska, Head of the Łódź Academic Centre for Artistic Initiatives, a member of the Łódź branch of the Polish Society of Gerontology, and a PhD student at the University of Łódź.

In addition to the lectures, the guests could attend accompanying events and take part in brain-stimulating exercises, including checking the condition of their brains and cognitive powers with the use of the Cognicare application and creating a mandala jointly with other attending seniors under the guidance of Anna Pacholik, a student from the Łódź Academy of Fine Arts. Many of the participants took the opportunity to have their blood pressure taken by dedicated conference staff. Regular blood pressure measurements are one of the key stroke prevention measures.

‘Around the Brain’ is the first in a series of conferences dedicated to people over 60 years of age, which have been planned by the DOZ Dbam o Zdrowie Foundation for 2018. Each of the coming events will be held in the middle of the month and will be devoted to a different health issue that is key to maintaining good health and well-being by seniors. To ensure true value for seniors, the programmes of all the conferences will be developed by well-established experts and professionals, including physicians, dieticians, psychologists, counsellors, physiotherapists, and pharmacists.

All of the events for seniors will be hosted at the Sukcesja Shopping Mall at Al. Politechniki 1, Łódź.

The conferences organised by the DOZ Dbam o Zdrowie Foundation are aimed at encouraging people over 60 years of age to stay active, try new ways of spending free time, and look after their mental and physical well-being. Such efforts are particularly important in the context of the aging Polish society.

“It is crucial that elderly people voice their needs and that aging-related changes occurring in their bodies are understood by themselves as well as their close ones. Seniors must also be encouraged to stay active, both physically and mentally. We are glad that already the first conference generated so much interest among seniors and was so well-received by them. We believe that the events we have planned will allow us to convince this age group that activities which help maintain good health and find contentment in life are available to them,” notes Elżbieta Łacina, board member of the DOZ Dbam o Zdrowie Foundation.

The ‘Around the Brain’ conference was held in partnership with: DOZ S.A., Sukcesja Shopping Mall, the Stroke Foundation, Medme.pl, and Cogninet. Media coverage of the event was provided by: Głos Seniora, Cafesenior.pl, and Magazyn 60+.

Apart from health conferences, the DOZ Dbam o Zdrowie Foundation has also prepared a series of musical events for people aged 60+. The first one, entitled ‘Piosenka niejedno ma imię’ (The Song Goes by Many Names), will take place on February 27th 2018, 5 pm, at the Sukcesja Shopping Mall (level -1) at Al. Politechniki 1, Łódź. The event will feature the greatest opera, operetta and musical hits as well as Polish songs, which will be performed by senior students from the Vocal and Acting Faculty of the Łódź Music Academy.

The DOZ Dbam o Zdrowie Foundation was established in 2007 on the initiative of Pelion, the founder, with a view to tackling the problem of barriers in access to pharmaceuticals. A year later, the Foundation was included in the list of public benefit organisations. Since its creation, the Foundation has given out more than PLN 10m to charitable causes. The funds have been donated to the most needy: the elderly, single mothers, families with many children and people suffering from chronic diseases. Since 2013, the Foundation has been a member of the Polish Donors Forum.
